Health Center / Nursing Office

There are two registered nurses, one American and one British trained who job share in order to provide 24-hour coverage for the University. They have posted campus office hours during the school day. After hours they may be contacted using a common emergency/after hours cell phone number - 662-6235. Each nurse also has her own cell phone should you wish more personal contact. The nurses encourage the use of the Internet for any questions or concerns you may have. Contact us at The Nursing Office.

Joseph N. France Hospital serves the island’s population of 36,000 people. Some physicians have been trained in the USA, Canada, or the United Kingdom. There are doctors available for many different specialties: surgery, radiology, pediatrics, obstetrics, family practice, and internal medicine. Hospital services are available for emergencies, but overall care is very basic in nature. Patients with severe health problems are evacuated to the nearest larger facility, Puerto Rico or Miami. Emergency evacuation and health insurance are a part of your tuition.

If you are currently on medication, bring a supply that will last you through your first semester. The medications that are readily available in St. Kitts are those you would find in your local pharmacy.

For those of you who will be bringing children and infants, a support group is available. Contact information is on the university web site. Medical care is extremely inexpensive compared to the US, but also limited in scope.

All students must have the rabies vaccination. You will need proof of this for your clinical year. Should you be unable to get your third injection prior to your travel, the nurses’ office will be happy to assist you. You need to carry the vaccine with you in a small cooler with some ice.

Please resolve any current health issues that may affect your studies here in St Kitts. It is very stressful to be in a different culture and environment, away from family and friends, and dealing with health issues so many miles from home.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

We look forward to meeting you.
