INTRODUCTION
We are pleased to announce
the launch of the student notebook access area. This project
will enable students to directly connect their notebook
computers to the RUSVM campus LAN. This document will serve
to provide you with the proper information on the process
and procedures to follow in order to gain access to this
new, privileged service in an efficient, fair, and orderly
manner. Please make sure to read each section carefully.
What is the Student
Laptop Area?
The LRC student laptop area
will serve as a wired and wireless connection for student
laptop access to RUSVM network resources. The wired area
will be located in the Veterinary Library next to the Circulation
Desk. We plan on having 27 laptop stations available initially,
increasing to approximately 40 stations soon thereafter.
Hours of operation for the LRC Laptop room will be from
7 AM-10 PM, Monday thru Thursday, 7 AM – 8 PM Friday,
and 9 AM – 10 PM, Sat & Sun. Information Technology
staff will be responsible for supervision of this resource
and will be available to assist users in the laptop area
during these operating hours.
The wireless connections
to the network can be in most of the outdoor areas, and
some of the class rooms. Soon all the classrooms on campus
will have a wireless access point. A map of all the ares
covered will be posted. Access to the wireless network is
always on. If you have trouble connecting to the wireless
network, please bring your laptop by the IT department to
have it looked at.
How do I take advantage
of this new service?
Students will be required
to come to the Help Desk in the LRC building for scheduling
of an appointed day to drop off their laptops for configuration.
Due to projected demand, we will be accepting 10 student
notebooks per day for configuration, Monday thru Friday.
Please note that you must deliver your notebook to ITS BEFORE
9:00AM on your scheduled configuration day.
After successful configuration,
students are now capable to connecting to the network to
access students apps, their own folder on the server, or
check their school e-mail.
What are the hardware/software
requirements?
For Wired :-
Initially, we will only be supporting Wintel (i.e.–AMD,
Pentium, Celeron, Cyrix) based notebooks capable of running
Windows 2000 or XP (processor speed >600Mhz, >=128MB
RAM). Unfortunately, we cannot support Windows CE, Palm,
Apple, Linux, or other OS types at this time. We may expand
the supported OS types in the future. At least one (1) gig
of free space should be on your computer to accommodate
any updates required for your laptop. Additionally, you
will be required to provide a 10/100 Ethernet network port
on your notebook. If you do not have an integrated network
port, you will have to purchase a PCMCIA or USB 10/100 Ethernet
network adapter.
For Wireless :-
The requirements are similar to that of the wired
network. Wintel based notebook running Windows 200 or Windows
XP. At least 128 mbs of RAM, and at least One (1) gig of
free space on the hard drive. You will be required to provide
a Wireless card for your laptop if one isn't already built
into your laptop.
What will be done
to my system during configuration?
To properly enable you to
connect your hardware to our systems, we must make some
changes to your existing configuration. This will require
administrator level access on your system. Additionally,
due to the obvious potential data risk to our own and other
connected systems, we WILL be requiring ALL student notebooks
connecting to our LAN to have our corporate virus software
installed. This will require removal of any existing virus
scanning applications. Please be sure to retain copies of
your current virus software and licensing for future reinstallation.
ITS staff will be more than happy to reinstall your properly
licensed, existing virus software before you leave the island.
Users must NOT disable or attempt to disable virus software
while attached to our systems. Additionally, since it is
the system owner’s responsibility to properly license
all installed software, we will be passing on the cost of
this license to the user. The fee for this license will
be $15US ($40EC). This license is valid for one year from
installation date, however the university has deemed that
active students will only be charged once for this installation.
This fee can be paid in the Administration building and
must be remitted prior to system configuration. You will
need to present this receipt prior to dropping off your
notebook in the LRC after configuration. It is solely the
system owner’s responsibility to maintain virus software
licensing or remove the expired software after leaving RUSVM.
RUSVM will not be held responsible for future licensing
of this or any other software installed on students notebooks.
These and other changes will be documented for your review.
You will be required to sign a release prior to configuration,
read and sign the Laptop usage Policy, and review configuration
documentation upon configuration completion.
What will I be allowed
to access?
Student laptop users will
only be allowed access to HTTP and SSL (secure HTTP) based
content on the Internet (subject to the RUSVM network usage
policy), Web based access to email on the MS Exchange mail
server, HTTP access to the RUSVM LRC web site server, and
all authorized user level access to the Student Apps folders
(note: copying of copyrighted material requires author/owners
permission), and home directory’s on the SKSTUDENT01
server.
What types of access
in NOT allowed?
We will be restricting access
to ONLY allowed services as outlined in the network usage
policy which all wired laptop users will be required to
read and sign prior to successful connection.
Generally, any areas expressly
addressed in the RUSVM network usage policy will be restricted.
Additionally, due to resource limitations, we cannot support
any file sharing (KAZAA, BearShare, etc), chatting (Mirc,
ChatSpace, etc), telephony (DialPad,net2phone,etc), video
conferencing (Netmeeting, etc), ftp, VPN, streaming media,
local peer-to-peer communications (laptop to laptop), remote
access, remote control, NNTP, NTP, etc types of applications.
Please stop by or email us at administrator@rossvet.edu.kn
if you have any questions about access to particular Internet
based applications.
NOTE: Laptop
users violating the laptop and/or network usage policy will
have this privilege revoked immediately.
What about printing?
To ensure a proper count
against your print quota, students are asked to save any
files that they need to have printed to their folder on
the server, and print the document from one of the computers
located in the LRC.
Please follow the instructions
as described to ensure the successful, organized rollout
of this popular new student service. We trust that this
new service will enhance your educational experience at
Ross. As with any new service, we may need to adjust times
or schedules as needed, and as always, we welcome your comments,
concerns or questions…
