A number of Web-accessible databases are available which should be of immediate interest to veterinarians; most are free. For example:

 

  • AGRICOLA

Comprehensive database produced by the National Agricultural Library (NAL), Beltsville, MD. AGRICOLA contains information about books, journals, and other materials housed at NAL and index to journal articles, reports, book chapter, etc.

 

  • Compilation of Literature on The Assessment of Animal Welfare and Animal Distress

  • Consultant: A Diagnostic Support System for Veterinary Medicine

CONSULTANT computer-assisted veterinary diagnostic program, provided through Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will generate a differential list of diseases based on clinical signs entered by the user. The database consists of more than 5,000 diseases of all major domestic animal species.

Online directories organize web sites based on a hierarchy of subject categories. For veterinary-related information the best online directory around is the award winning

Net Vet web site. NetVet actually consists of two related services: NetVet Veterinary Resources, which focuses on Internet sites of veterinary interest, and the Electronic Zoo, which links to all kinds of animal-related sites on the Internet. NetVet’s “webmaster” continually monitors the Internet for veterinary-related resources and services, application materials, news and upcoming events, to name a few.
