Information on local internet access

On the island, you have the choice of (3) Internet connection options. They are:

1) Dial-up connection - This requires a 56K modem and is a slow connection. This will cost approximately $65EC/month PLUS a .20 cent cost every time you dial. I do not recommend this option. Cable & Wireless

2) Cable - This connection is offered through The Cable company and cost is $100EC/month. You need a Cable Modem and can purchase it in the states and bring it down with you OR purchase it from The Cable for $300EC (The model required is a DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem). The Cable are in the process of completing the final stage of upgrading their connection speed and should add considerable speed to the Internet and at a lower cost than DSL. This is a good economical solution. The Cable

3) DSL - This connection is offered through Cable and Wireless and the costs vary.

For those of you planning on having a roommate you should purchase a router (Cable or DSL depending on which connection you choose). This will allow you to share the Internet connection between multiple computers and cut down on your monthly cost. Many students are purchasing Wireless routers. Remember if you purchase a wireless router make sure you have a wireless network card in your laptop to take advantage of the mobility. These routers (both wired and wireless) are simple to set up. If you mention to the Internet provider company you are connecting a router, they will charge you an extra fee! Just an FYI...set it up yourself!
